Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud: Acronis Backup Fails Because snapAPI Kernel Module Is Not Loaded for Kernel 6.11.x

How to resolve backup failures caused by the snapAPI kernel module not loading on Linux systems running kernel version 6.11.x

Overview

Backups on Linux devices may fail when the snapAPI kernel module cannot be loaded on systems running Linux kernel 6.11.x.

The issue occurs because the version of snapAPI included with affected Acronis agents is not compatible with kernel 6.11.x, preventing the module from loading successfully. As a result, snapshot-based backups cannot be performed.

Applies to

  • Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud
  • Acronis Cyber Protect Agent for Linux
  • Linux systems running kernel version 6.11.x

Symptoms

Affected devices may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Backup plans fail to start or complete.
  • Disk or volume backups fail.
  • The snapAPI kernel module fails to load.
  • Error messages referencing snapAPI appear in logs.
  • Snapshot creation fails during backup operations.

Common log entries may include messages indicating that the snapAPI module could not be loaded or compiled for the current kernel version.

Cause

Kernel version 6.11.x introduced changes that are incompatible with the snapAPI module included in affected Acronis agent releases.

Because the module cannot be loaded, the agent is unable to create the snapshots required for backup operations.

Resolution

Acronis has addressed this issue in newer agent builds that include an updated snapAPI module compatible with kernel 6.11.x.

To resolve the issue:

  1. Update the Acronis Cyber Protect Agent for Linux to the latest available build.
  2. Reboot the system if required.
  3. Verify that the snapAPI module loads successfully.
  4. Re-run the backup plan.

Workaround

If an updated agent is not immediately available:

  • Downgrade to a supported Linux kernel version where snapAPI compatibility is confirmed.
  • Delay upgrading production systems to kernel 6.11.x until a compatible agent version has been deployed.
  • Test kernel updates in a staging environment before rolling them out broadly.

Note: Kernel downgrades should be performed in accordance with your organisation's change management procedures.

Verification

After updating the agent:

  1. Confirm the snapAPI module is loaded:
    lsmod | grep snapapi
  2. Check the module status:
    modinfo snapapi
  3. Run a test backup to verify successful snapshot creation.

Impact

Until the issue is resolved:

  • Backup jobs may fail completely.
  • Recovery point creation may be interrupted.
  • Linux devices running kernel 6.11.x may remain unprotected.

Action Required

  • Identify Linux systems running kernel 6.11.x.
  • Update affected Acronis agents to the latest supported version.
  • Validate successful snapAPI module loading.
  • Perform a test backup after remediation.

Additional Information

This issue is specific to compatibility between the Acronis snapAPI module and Linux kernel 6.11.x. Future kernel upgrades should be tested against supported Acronis agent versions to avoid backup interruptions.
